Many times, a gas furnace may stop working altogether. It may not even show any signs for one to decipher what has gone wrong. In this case, there are a few basic steps that owners can take to fine-tune a furnace.

Step One: Inspect the thermostat

Make sure that it is set to heat above the normal room temperature. If the fan is not on, do switch it up.

Step Two: Can the power each the furnace?

Search for burn marks on the control board. Check the breaker and fuse of the furnace in the case that the fan does not work. Look for loose connections and wires. After that, search for a green light on the blower compartment. If the light flashes red, then the difficulty may lie with the furnace control board, thermostat, transformer, the blower motor or the run capacitor. Make sure that the reservoir on the condensate pump is not full.

Step three: Is there a pilot light on the furnace?

If yes, then make sure it is on and the light or the fire is in contact with the thermocouple. If only the pilot is working and the main burner is not, then touch the side of the furnace to make sure it is warm. If it is not, then the control board, thermostat, limit control or the gas valve could be causing the problems.

Step three: The burners.

If the main burners do not come on, make sure that the gas supply pipe to the furnace is not broken. If not, then the gas valve or furnace control may be troublesome. If the burner cannot flame up for more than a few seconds, than the flame sensor may need cleaning.

Final step

If all these steps fail, then it is better to call in professional help for the gas furnace.
